Gmail Keyboard Shortcuts Every Professional Should Know in 2026

7 July 2026

Gmail shortcuts are off by default. Turning them on is the single fastest change you can make to your inbox workflow — most people save 10+ minutes a day just by not reaching for the mouse.

Turn them on

Settings (gear icon) → See all settings → General tab → Keyboard shortcuts: On → Save Changes.

Navigation

  • j / k — move to next / previous email
  • g then i — go to Inbox
  • g then s — go to Starred
  • g then t — go to Sent
  • u — return to inbox from an open email

Reading and organizing

  • x — select an email (for bulk actions)
  • e — archive
  • # — delete
  • s — star an email
  • ! — mark as spam
  • shift + u — mark as unread

Composing and replying

  • c — compose new email
  • r — reply
  • a — reply all
  • f — forward
  • tab then enter — send (from inside compose)

The workflow that actually saves time

Shortcuts speed up navigating your inbox. They don't speed up writing the reply — that's still the 3-4 minutes of staring at a blank compose box. Pair shortcuts with an AI drafting tool and both halves of the workflow get fast: j to the next email, one click for AI.Reply to draft a complete response, tab enter to send. That combination is how you clear a 40-email inbox in under 15 minutes.
